# Instagram Story Reply Automation: Turn 24-Hour Content into Leads

> DM Now can match text present in eligible story-reply webhook events and send a configured response. Story triggers are account-wide rather than scoped to a selected story. Standalone reactions, polls and sticker payloads are not guaranteed, and sends remain subject to matching, quotas, pacing and Meta acceptance.

Stories expire in 24 hours, and eligible text replies can enter the Instagram messaging channel. DM Now can automate a configured response, but it does not know that every viewer follows you and cannot guarantee response timing or conversion.

## How does story reply automation actually work?

An eligible story reply can appear as a messaging webhook event. A connected automation can evaluate and respond inside the standard messaging window, subject to provider acceptance and account pacing. The Story's 24-hour visibility is separate from the messaging window, which is measured from the recipient's latest message.

You configure two things in [story automation](/features/story-automation):

1. **The trigger** — any eligible text reply across the connected account, or replies containing a keyword such as “GUIDE”. DM Now does not select a specific story.
2. **The response** — the DM that delivers your link, lead magnet, price list or answer, optionally followed by a question that starts a real conversation.

Put “Reply GUIDE and I’ll send it” on the story when that matches your automation. Eligible matching senders can receive the response and become contacts subject to limits; inspect Activity rather than assuming every reply succeeded.

## What playbooks work best on stories?

**Link delivery.** Instagram also supports native [Story link stickers](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/192168966243613). A sticker offers direct, user-controlled navigation; “Reply LINK” instead starts a conversation and depends on webhook matching and message delivery. Test both with equivalent destinations rather than assuming one converts better. (The same comparison can apply to feed posts—see the [link-in-bio vs comment-to-DM breakdown](/blog/link-in-bio-vs-comment-to-dm).)

**The lead-magnet flow.** Tease the resource, ask for a keyword reply, deliver it, then transparently request a configured field if appropriate. DM Now does not publish surface-specific conversion claims — the full mechanics are in the [lead generation guide](/blog/instagram-lead-generation-guide).

**Drops and launches.** “Reply DROP for the early link” can send a configured URL. Delivery queues during bursts, and DM Now does not schedule inventory or enforce scarcity.

**Q&A links.** Post an answer with a text keyword for a detailed resource. Sticker and poll payloads are not guaranteed, and Contacts do not automatically receive topic tags or conversation history.

## What are the rules for story automation?

For this Story-reply workflow, use an eligible professional account (Business or Creator), connect through Meta's official Business Login and respond only after the person sends the Story reply. The normal messaging window lasts 24 hours from the recipient's latest message; Story expiration does not reset or extend it. Do not use this workflow for cold DMs to people who did not engage. The compliance details are covered in [is DM automation allowed?](/blog/is-instagram-dm-automation-allowed).

## How do I set this up before tonight's story?

In [DM Now](/signup), connect an eligible professional account through Meta, create an account-wide story-reply automation, choose the matching rule and write the response. Post the story with the keyword, perform a real test and inspect Activity. DM Now does not attach a source-story field to the Contact record.

Free includes monthly limits of 1,000 DMs and 1,000 new contacts. Plan limits, account pacing and Meta delivery still determine real outcomes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you automate replies to Instagram story replies?

Eligible text story replies can trigger an active account-wide automation using any-message or keyword matching. DM Now does not scope the trigger to one selected story or guarantee delivery timing; verify the exact interaction and outcome in Activity.

### Do story reply automations work with reactions and emoji?

Replies with text are the reliable trigger surface; quick emoji reactions behave differently in the inbox. The strong pattern is announcing a keyword on the story itself — “Reply GUIDE and I’ll DM it” — so every trigger is an explicit, high-intent message you’re allowed to answer.

### Why automate story replies instead of answering by hand?

An active automation can process eligible events without a person online. It still depends on matching, plan quotas, account pacing and Meta acceptance, and a completed CRM lead requires the recipient to provide every configured field.

### Is story reply automation allowed by Instagram?

Meta’s official API and an eligible professional account are the correct technical path. You remain responsible for message eligibility, content, frequency, consent and current Meta rules; an official integration does not make every campaign automatically compliant.

### What should the automated story reply say?

Deliver the requested link or answer clearly, add at most one relevant question, and avoid treating the interaction as permission for an unrelated broadcast. Keep the response current and verify delivery in Activity.
