Instagram Auto Reply Setup for Comments, Stories and DMs

Repeated link and price requests can be candidates for automation. Exact eligibility depends on the interaction surface, connected account, trigger and Meta’s messaging rules; automation does not mean every event will be answered.

What can actually be auto-replied on Instagram?

Four surfaces support automation through Meta's official messaging API:

Instagram Auto Reply Setup for Comments, Stories and DMs data table
SurfaceTriggerWhat the automation does
Post & reel commentsKeyword/media rulesOptional public reply + one private reply
Story repliesEligible text replyAccount-wide configured DM response
Live commentsKeyword during an active liveOne private reply while eligible
Inbound DMsKeyword or configured fallbackResponse inside the applicable window

Everything above requires a professional account (Business or Creator — free to switch in Instagram settings) and a tool that connects through Meta's official Business Login. Sharing Instagram credentials with an unofficial bot is unsafe and may violate Meta's terms or put the account at risk.

How do I set up an Instagram auto reply?

For a simple flow in DM Now:

  1. Connect your professional account through Meta's official login — no password sharing, no browser extension, no phone left running.
  2. Pick one trigger surface. Comment media scoping, story replies, live comments and inbound DMs are separate automations.
  3. Write the allowed response. A comment or live event permits one initial private reply. DM Now’s optional follow request is not verified.
  4. Test and review. Activate narrowly, perform a real eligible interaction and inspect sent, skipped or failed results in Activity. Keep an automation active for future comments on older media; re-trigger only recovers recent skipped events.

Meta's official private-replies documentation limits an initial comment private reply to one message within seven days. A live-comment private reply must be sent during the broadcast. Another message requires the recipient to respond, after which follow-ups must stay inside the 24-hour messaging window.

The mechanics of the comment → DM flow are covered step-by-step in our comment-to-DM setup guide.

What should be automated — and what shouldn't?

Automate the repeatable: link requests, price questions, lead-magnet links, FAQ answers and welcome replies to inbound DMs. DM Now has no new-follower trigger. These are messages where a consistent answer may help, while delivery timing and business outcomes remain uncertain.

Keep humans on negotiations, collaborations, sensitive support, disputes and contextual conversations. DM Now does not provide a conversation inbox or general handoff workflow; continue them in Instagram. AI replies are a Pro fallback for otherwise unmatched DMs, use a fixed response style, can be wrong, and hold selected sensitive topics for human review.

Why does reply speed change outcomes?

Faster responses may improve a user’s experience, but DM Now does not publish a universal conversion benchmark or prove a ranking effect. Sends are serialized per account and can queue or fail. Measure response and destination outcomes using your own data.

The same logic applies to story replies: the story disappears in 24 hours, so an answer an hour later is often an answer after the moment has passed.

What does this cost?

DM Now’s Free plan covers unlimited automations with monthly limits of 1,000 DMs and 1,000 new contacts. Pro removes those application quotas and adds a monthly AI allowance, moderation and collaboration detection. Neither plan removes Meta’s delivery rules.

If the workflow fits, configure it before publishing, then verify a real eligible interaction and review its result in Activity.

Frequently asked questions

Can Instagram reply to comments automatically?
An eligible comment that matches an active automation can receive an optional public reply and one private reply. Delivery is not guaranteed: media scope, cooldown, moderation, quotas, account pacing and Meta acceptance all matter. Instagram’s saved replies remain manual templates.
Is auto-replying against Instagram’s rules?
Using Meta’s official API and an eligible professional account is the correct technical path, but it does not make every message lawful or policy-compliant. You remain responsible for eligibility, content, frequency, consent and Meta’s current rules. Avoid password bots, scraping and cold outreach.
What should my auto reply say?
Keep a public reply short and accurate, such as “I’ll try to send that by DM—check your requests too.” Do not claim the DM was sent because public-reply delivery happens first and the private reply can still fail. The DM can contain the promised link, price or link to a file, with one clear next step.
Can I auto reply to story replies too?
Eligible text story replies can trigger an account-wide story automation. Standalone reaction, poll and sticker payloads are not guaranteed. Verify the exact interaction in Activity before advertising the workflow, and do not promise a delivery time.
Do auto replies work while I sleep?
Active automations can process incoming eligible events without a person online. They do not guarantee every match, delivery or lead capture, and high-volume sends queue behind account pacing. Review Activity and plan usage for actual outcomes.
